Harvest – a glimpse at northern countryside Images of soldiers on display

A solo painting exhibition called ‘Harvest’ by artist Nguyen Van Cuong opened on Sunday at HCMC Museum of Fine Arts, giving visitors a glimpse at the peaceful countryside in the North with immense rice fields, buffalos pulling ploughs and diligent farmers working on the farm.
Nguyen Van Cuong is known for his oil paintings and wood carvings of Vietnam’s countryside. In Harvest, the artist has taken this signature trait into a new dimension with carving and filling techniques on lacquer.
The exhibition features over 20 pieces with bright tone colors, depicting the joy of farmers at the harvest, the beauty of nature and the happiness of farmers.
‘Images of peaceful countryside with vast fields studded with farmers, cottage houses, poetic rivers, green farms, buffalo carts and rice straw stacks seem to be always in Vietnamese people’s memories. And to me, those images are so beautiful and sacred so I use brush to keep them more lively,” said Nguyen Van Cuong.
The show runs till January 1 at the museum, 97A Pho Duc Chinh Street in HCMC’s District 1.
*Another art exhibition called ‘Meeting III’ opened on Monday at Applied Arts, 5 Phan Dang Luu Street in HCMC’s Binh Thanh District.
The show features 38 artworks by 24 artists who are members of the Vietnam Veteran Association and the Club of Pensioners of HCMC Fine Arts University. Works are made of oil on canvas, lacquer, woodcut, mixed media and sculptural works, depicting the beauty and braveness of soldiers in the past battles and desires for peace.
The show runs till December 24.
