Boosting linking for development of Mekong Delta’s tourism products
On 26th March 2014, Viet Nam National Administration of Tourism (VNAT)
held a workshop on “Linking for development of Mekong Delta’s typical tourism
products” in Can Tho City.
In attendance were Mr. Ho Anh Tuan - Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports and
Tourism (MCST); Mr. Le Van Tam - Deputy Chairman of People’s Committee of Can
Tho City; Mr. Nguyen Van Tuan – Director General of VNAT; Mr. Nguyen Huu Tho –
Chairman of Viet Nam Tourism Association; Mr. Le Thanh Phong – Deputy Chairman
of Mekong Delta Tourism Association; representatives of MCST, VNAT, Departments
of Culture, Sports and Tourism of 13 Mekong Delta’s provinces and city.
In 2013, Mekong Delta attracted more than 1.6 million international arrivals,
19.2 million domestic trippers. Total tourism receipts reached nearly VND 5.2
thousand billion, representing 2.7% of national total tourism receipts. These
results are not commensurate with the region’s potentialities and advantages.
Therefore, the workshop was organized to research, propose solutions for
developing tourism products and promote Mekong Delta’s tourism, especially offer
cooperation mechanism to develop tourism sector commensurately with its
potentialities.
At the workshop, participants made suggestion of linking for development of
Mekong Delta’s typical tourism products. The localities should develop products
in accordance with strengths of each locality and coordinate to create the
region’s common products.
Speaking at the workshop, Deputy Minister Ho Anh Tuan has directed VNAT to
prepare to launch the project on “Developing typical tourism products of Mekong
Delta” in July 2014 and to make plans for establishment of a Committee
regulating tourism activities in Mekong Delta.
