Discover seven destinations in the Mekong Delta
The Mekong Delta is an area of rich natural resources and unique
historical and cultural value of four ethnic groups: Kinh, Chinese, Khmer and
Cham.
The Mekong Delta Tourism Association has recently recognized seven typical
tourist destinations of the Mekong Delta.
The two most famous tourist sites in Can Tho, the largest city in the Mekong
Delta, are Cai Rang floating market and Truc Lam Phuong Nam Monastery.
Cai Rang is one of the most famous floating markets in the Southwestern region.
From early morning until about 8am-9am, hundreds of boats gather at the market
to sell fruits and agricultural products of the region. Coming to the floating
market, visitors will see the bustling atmosphere of the market and also have
the opportunity to observe the life of traders on boats. There boats are like
"mobile homes" on the water, with full amenities.
Truc Lam Phuong Nam Monastery in My Khanh commune, Phong Dien district is one of
the largest temples in the southwest area, with an area of four hectares. It was
built under the Buddhist architecture of the Ly-Tran Dynasty, including the main
hall, the drum and bell towers, the Mercy Goddess temple, the Maitreya temple,
the One Pillar Pagoda, the auditorium, the guest house, the library, and the
medical room.
Inside the main hall there is a bronze Buddha statue weighing 3.5 tons and the
statues of Bodhisattva Samantabhadra, Bodhisattva Manjushri, Bodhidharma and the
three founders of Truc Lam sect.
Three newly-recognized tourist sites in Bac Lieu Province are the artificial sea
of Nha Mat resort, the Hung Vuong square and the house of the Prince of Bac
Lieu.
The artificial beach at the Nha Mat resort is the largest one of its kind in the
Mekong Delta, with a modern wave-creating system and slides of nearly 30 meters
high. It is divided into three zones for kids, adults and adventurous games.
There are artificial mountains around the beach, with many unique caves. There
is also a stage with 2,000 seats and animal-shaped trees.
Considered the most beautiful square in the Mekong Delta, Hung Vuong Square in
Ward 1, Bac Lieu City has an area of 4ha, including a complex of architectural
works: the Culture and Art Exhibition Centre, Cao Van Lau Theatre, the icon of
dan kim – the typical musical instrument of Bac Lieu, the icons of three ethnic
groups of Kinh - Khmer – Chinese, the memorial monument to martyrs, the Mau Than
1968 monument, a fountain and many trees.
Located near the riverbank of Bac Lieu, the house of Bac Lieu Prince (No. 13
Dien Bien Phu Street, Ward 3, Bac Lieu City) is not only the busiest hotel in
the city, but also a place associated with the name of Cong tu Bac Lieu (the
dashing gentleman of Bac Lieu) - the most famous black prince in Cochinchina in
the early 20th century.
According to old stories, no gentlemen of Bac Lieu were as rich and ostentatious
as Tran Trinh Huy- the dashing gentleman of Bac Lieu. Cong Tu Bac Lieu shocked
the whole country when he visit his fields by air as there were only two
airplanes in Vietnam at the time, Huy’s and that of King Bao Dai. Many people
also said that the Black Prince is renowned for “burning money to cook congee”
to get the attention of a girl.
The house of the Black Prince is now Cong Tu Bac Lieu hotel with six bedrooms.
Of which, there are five common rooms with a rate of 250,000/ a night,
particularly the Black Prince’s room costs as twice high as others, but tourists
must book in advance because many people also expect to stay in this room. The
house was built with French imported materials in 1919 and designed by a French
architect.
The two remaining attractions included on the list of seven new typical tourist
sites in the Mekong Delta in 2014 are the Tram Chim National Park and Nguyen
Sinh Sac monument in Dong Thap province.
With an area of 7.588ha, Tram Chim National Park (in Tram Chim town, Tam Nong
district) is a miniature Dong Thap Muoi, the home to many species of plants and
nearly 200 species of waterfowl, accounting for 1/4 of bird species in Vietnam,
including many rare species.
The most typical bird species here is the red-headed crane, which is 1.7m high
with smooth gray coat, high neck, red head and large wings. This is one of 15
remaining species of cranes in the world that is in danger of extinction.
Along with Tram Chim National Park is Nguyen Sinh Sac Monument in Ward 4, Cao
Lanh City is also one of the most popular destinations in Dong Thap that
attracts many domestic and foreign tourists. With an area of 3.6ha, the monument
is divided into three main areas, including: the tomb of Mr. Nguyen Sinh Sac,
President Ho Chi Minh’s father, President Ho Chi Minh's stilt house and lotus
ponds. This architectural ensemble was recognized as a national monument by the
Ministry of Culture Sports and Tourism in 1992.
