Wind ensemble to blow City away
A group of Norwegian musicians will perform classics by contemporary composers at the HCM City’s Opera House this week.
They will be accompanied by members of the city’s Ballet Symphony Orchestra.
The event, Windows of the World, will feature trombonist Henning Andreassen, bassoonist Bror Aune Larssen, and Geir Nordeng – a specialist in percussion instruments.
Under the baton of Norwegian conductor Truls Sanaker, the group will open the show with Windows of the World, a popular work by English composer Peter Graham.
They will also play extracts from West Side Story, an opera based on Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet by American composer Leonard Bernstein.
Hungarian composer Gustav Peter’s Sourvenir de Cirque Renz will also be featured.
The evening will close with Vietnamese artists from the symphony orchestra playing Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No 2 in C minor Op.17 conducted by Tran Vuong Thach, one of the country’s very few skilled conductors.
Conductor Truls was a member of the Royal Norwegian Navy Orchestra in Bergen before honing his skills at the NorthWestern University in Illinois.
Bassoonist Larssen studied music at the Norwegian Academy of Music and continued his career at the Royal Danish Academy of Music in Copenhagen. He plays both classical and jazz music with equal felicity.
Trombonist Andreassen has performed with several leading bands in Norway, Sweden and German.
Nordeng, who began his professional career when he was 16, now performs for the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestras and Royal Norwegian Navy Orchestra.
The show is part of Transposition, a music project launched by ULTIMA Oslo Contemporary Music Festival held annually in the Norwegian capital.
Transposition offers training courses and stages performances in many countries to help musicians improve their skills.
Project leader Truls said their artists hope to connect with people around the world through music.
The show will begin at 8pm today, March 19, at the Opera House, 7 Lam Son Square, District 1.
Tickets, priced from VND100,000 to VND200,000 (US$12), are available at the theatre’s box office.
