Perform for the world, tourists
A traditional music programme
named “Perform for the World” will be held on a weekly basis, starting March 18
at the Youth Theatre, Hanoi, 11 Ngo Thi Nham, Hanoi.
This is part of a project to advertise Vietnamese folk and traditional arts to
foreign visitors. This is a key programme of the Youth Theatre this year, to
support the “Impressive Vietnam” campaign launched by the Ministry of Culture,
Sports and Tourism early this year.
Each performance will include 11 acts divided into three genres - dancing,
traditional instruments and foreign language singing - arranged by People's
Artist Le Hung, director of the theatre, and accomplished artist Trong Thuy.
Traditional dances will be choreographed by Quoc Toan, Lam Yen and People's
Artists Phi Long and Anh Phuong, with music by Phu Quang, Duc Lien, Huynh Tu and
Quoc Trung.
An act, Perfume of Lotus, will feature the flower of summer, a symbol of
pureness, elegance and noble beauty of the Vietnamese.
Using a traditional trong com (cylindrical drum), which dates to the 10th
century, the artists will explore the joys and hopes of farming to celebrate
farmers' new year in the northern delta during Tet (Lunar New Year festival) and
spring in a dance, Going on Spring Pilgrimage.
Another dance performance, Forest's Lullaby, evokes the harmony of the Central
Highlands with its mighty mountains, wild jungle wind and the desires of
courting couples. The Central Highlands represents powerful and distinctive
culture characteristics of Viet Nam.
The yellow of apricot flower, a symbol of spring in southern Viet Nam for
thousands of years, showing the warm of the southern sunlight, will be presented
in the dance, Sparkling Apricot Flower.
One of the characteristics of the Mong people, of the northern mountainous
region, is that a guy has to be good at playing the pan-pipes if he wants to
find a girlfriend. In spring, while the men are farming on the mountain or
drinking all night long, every Mong girl still can hear the rhyhmic melody of
pan-pipes. A dance entitled Looking for a Soulmate in Spring describes the
festival.
Singer Anh Tuyet's Joy To The World and Hai Yen's Don't Cry for Me Argentina
bring in a foreign element.
Artists Duc Lien, Co Huy Hung, Thu Trang and Thu Ha will perform solo flute, dan
nguyet (Vietnamese two-chord guitar), dan bau (monochord) and T'rung (the bamboo
xylophone of the Central Highlands).
To attract foreign tourists to the Youth Theatre, People’s Artist, Director Le
Hung is also arranging short comedies in English.
Tickets are available at the MayaViet Consultancy and the Viet Nam Youth
Theatre.
