Long dress village
Since long time, the image of charming girl
in long dress of different elegant colors is a symbol of Vietnam and long dress
is a cultural product and traditional cloth of Vietnam. But when did it appear
and where is its origin....?
Along ancient streets with the aristocratic and antique style, Luong Van Can
street is known as “Long dress” street with famous tailors such as Vinh Trach,
Phuc Trach, Tan Trach...When tailors are asked why there is same letter “Trach”
in their brand name, they are all proud talking about their native home land, it
is Trach Xa village, My Duc district, Ha Tay province, a traditional village of
making long dress. The elders in Trach Xa village also do not know when their
village started making long dress, but come back to original history, the image
of Viet’s girl gracefully in long dress was carved on Ngoc Lu bronze drum
thousands years ago. In Trach Xa village, it seems that all people know
tailoring. They are able to practice as tailor anywhere only with a knapsack
with a ruler of 40cm, a scissors, a chalk, needle and thread. Many tailors from
Trach Xa were asked to make clothes for King in Hue palace, they were only
permitted to look from a distance but have to make precise clothes measurement.
Like Kimono in Japan, Hanbok in Korea or Sari in India, Long dress of Vietnam is
requested very severe standards in order to express the most precise line, from
the selection of style, color, material and decoration,.... The most difficult
part is the lap of dress, therefore all Trach Xa villagers know the sentence:
“glue inside and spider eggs outside”, means that the stitches on the lap of
dress should look as small as eggs of spider. In order to have such stitches,
Trach Xa villagers have invented the way to hold the needle vertically which
make the stitches small, straight and steady. Besides a nice lap, the secret of
cutting and measuring also contributes to the charming & graceful of Trach Xa’s
long dress. Many tourists visit Trach Xa in order to seek for business
cooperation and also to admire the talent tapered fingers on soft silk string
and to understand deeper about immaterial culture of Vietnam’s long dress. Trach
Xa people always preserve and love their trade as a precious thing taught by
their ancestor, they always proud to bring the everlasting beauty to women and
nation.
