Valuable document related to Paracel Islands uncovered
A family in Dong Ho village,
An Hai commune, in the island district of Ly Son, the central province of Quang
Ngai turned over an important old document related to the Paracel Islands to
Quang Ngai authorities.
The document is a royal ordinance of King Minh Mang sending a crew of three
ships with 24 sailors to the Hoang Sa (Paracel) Islands on April 15, 1835.
According to this document, Vo Van Hung, a member of the navy of Ly Son, had to
choose young men who were strong and good at swimming for the crew. Dang Van
Siem, a distant relative of Dang Ton, who discovered this document, acted as
guide while a man named Vo Van Cong was responsible for logistics.
According to Dr. Nguyen Dang Vu, a cultural researcher, and Deputy Director of
the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Quang Ngai province, this is
the only royal ordinance that families on Ly Son Island have preserved related
to the naval forces protecting the Paracel Islands nearly 200 years ago under
the order of the Nguyen Dynasty.
