Phu Lang Pottery
A thatched cottage surrounded
by a brood of chickens eating paddies in the yard and a jackfruit weighed down
with fruits in front of it, a couple of fishermen rowing a boat, or a blooming
lotus pond, these images as well as other beautiful scenes of Vietnamese nature
and people are all expressed in Phu Lang potteries.
Being not as glossy as the enamel used in Bat Trang pottery, the enamel of Phu
Lang has a brown color mixed with changing colors: yellowish, dark yellow, green
yellow, red yellow and brown yellow. All represent a deep beauty but not a showy
and jocund beauty with sophisticated curves as that of Bat Trang.
Until now, Phu Lang pottery is still handmade. Phu Lang ceramic pieces are
manually smoothed. Therefore, the attractive and unique feature of Phu Lang
pottery is the art of shaping it. It is the harmony of traditional styles with
new and original designs such as crooked or oval flower pots and shapes of a fry
or smiling face. Some products are brushed and covered with broken stone or fine
sand on the surface.
Today, many pieces of Phu Lang pottery, from usual jars, basins and pots to tea
sets statuettes, have been used as gifts for birthdays and weddings, or
souvenirs for foreigners.
