Mass grave of revolutionary martyrs found at Vinh Long airport
A mass grave of revolutionary
martyrs has been found in Vinh Long Province airport’s precinct by the Vinh Long
Military Headquarters yesterday.
Leaders of the province and relatives of the martyrs were invited to grace the
ceremony of exhumation.
The remains were believed to be of revolutionary soldiers who sacrificed their
lives in the attack on the Vinh Long airport on the last night of the Year of
the Goat in 1968.
According to local authorities’ reports, 48 soldiers from Special Task Forces
and Company 203, under Battalion 857, raided and successfully occupied the
airport.
At 6 am the following morning, the South armed forces counter-attacked and took
back the airport. 35 North Vietnamese soldiers were killed in the ferocious
battle.
The corpses of the revolutionary soldiers were then collected and buried in a
mass grave in the airport precinct.
The Vinh Long Military Headquarters said that it had earlier conducted many
searches for the corpses of the martyrs, but to no avail.
The bodies will be laid to rest elsewhere.
At least three million Vietnamese and 58,000 Americans lost their lives during
the War against the US, which ended in 1975.
