Reviving Sinh Village folk art
Artists of Sinh Village
Painting, a type of Vietnamese folk painting, in Thua Thien-Hue Province have
proposed a VND33-million project to create new paintings to boost local tourism,
as reported by Nguoi Lao Dong.
Sinh Village Painting is famous as the traditional craft of folk woodblock
painting in the central province of Thua Thien-Hue’s Phu Vang District. Unlike
the paintings of Dong Ho in Bac Ninh Province and Hang Trong in Hanoi, Sinh
paintings are simple. Bas relief and paintings alike use traditional colors,
reflecting people’s innermost feelings, wishes and dreams and are used for
worship.
Sinh Village Paintings are done on rustic paper on a jack wood printing-board.
After being printed in black, the works are sometimes completed with colorful
lines in the traditional colors of red, green, yellow and black.
Sinh Village has preserved 42 rustic paintings in themes including nature,
animals and daily life. With the recent revival of folk art, Ky Huu Phuoc,
master of Hue’s folk paintings, in collaboration with local artists, has created
new works and hopes to sell them soon to promote the village’s art.
The Center of Agricultural Extension of Thua Thien-Hue Province has pledged to
finance to the work.
