Two more Vietnamese areas recognized world’s biosphere reserves

      The International Coordinating Council of the Man and the Biosphere (MAB) Programme, under UNESCO, on May 26th gathered in Jeju, South Korea to examine documents on Cu Lao Cham and Mui Ca Mau.
Immediately after the session, Vice Chairman of the Hoi An Municipal People’s Committee, Truong Van Bay, announced with joy that the two Vietnamese localities famous for rich natural biological resources had been recognised by the council as World Biosphere Reserves.
So far, eight Vietnamese places have been so recognized, among 500 around the world.
The eight Vietnamese biosphere reserves include Can Gio salt-water forest, Cat Tien National Park, Cat Ba archipelago, Kien Giang coastal area, the Red River Delta, Nghe An western area, Cu Lao Cham and Mui Ca Mau.
UNESCO’s recognition of biosphere reserves aims to conserve biodiversity, natural resources of the localities and promote socio-economic development together with preservation of traditional cultural values.
