Rare pottery works found in wrecks
As part of the “Quang Nam –
4th Heritage Itinerary 2009,” the Hoi An Relics Management Centre is displaying
a collection of Chu Dau pottery fished out from ancient wrecks off the Cu Lao
Cham or Cham Islands.
These pottery works were produced in Chu Dau village, Hai Duong province in the
14th century. Some of them are being displayed for the first time.
From 1997-1999, Vietnamese and foreign experts fished out more than 240,000
pottery items of all kinds from an ancient wreck located at 15km from Cu Lao
Cham. They belong to various sorts of Chu Dao pottery styles.
Patterns on these items are very abundant, ranging from humans to animals,
plants, and landscapes.
The excavation of the ancient wreck in Cu Lao Cham makes a significant
contribution to the scientific research of international trade on the Vietnamese
sea in the past.
The collection of Chu Dao pottery is now at 46 Nguyen Thai Hoc, Hoi An town.
