Biodiversity in Nha Trang Bay a priority
Nearly 30 local scientists and
managers discussed ways of preserving the biodiversity of Nha Trang Bay in a
sustainable manner to ensure economic, social and environmental benefits at a
seminar in Nha Trang City, central Khanh Hoa province on June 9.
Research Institute for Aquaculture No. 3 presented the five models it has
created where different types of aquatic species are raised at the same time to
generate more income and alleviate water pollution.
Ngo Thi Kim Tho from the provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural
Development said that it is necessary to restore the mangrove forests, breed
exhausted aquatic varieties, ban small fishing boats operating in the bay’s
waters and combine aquaculture with marine tourism.
President of the Nha Trang Bay Club, Bui Mau stressed on the necessity for
setting up an agency that will cover activities of both the seafood and tourism
industries within the bay.
The 250s.q km Nha Trang Bay boasts more sea creatures than any other area in
Vietnam, including coral, seaweed and mangrove forests.
The bay is home to 300 different species of fish, of which 60 species were
discovered for the first time in Vietnam. It is also recognised as one of the 29
most beautiful bays in the world.
