Ha Long Bay prepares for third round of polling
The "New7Wonders" contest will
choose 21 sites from around the world for the next phase of voting on July 21,
and Vietnamese agencies are sparing no effort to get Ha Long Bay on the list.
The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism has said that the bay has been in
the lead in the group of sea-related landscapes, Category G, in the New7Wonders
poll, followed by Cox’s Bazaar beach of Bangladesh.
Le Toan, director of the Quang Ninh Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism,
said the Ha Long Festival in May had helped it jump from third to first position
in the poll.
As of February 15, Ha Long Bay had ranked third among the 25 World Heritage
sites in category G in the second round of the campaign to select the new
Natural Wonders of the World.
The bay was ranked right below Australia and Papua New Guinea’s Great Barrier
Reef and Bangladesh’s beach Cox’s Bazaar coral reef.
In the second round, Newopenworld, which organises the contest, divided 261
nominees selected in the first round into seven categories from A to G,
corresponding to seven types of landscapes.
Toan said Quang Ninh Province will co-operate with relevant agencies to canvass
votes for the bay from young people.
