Ke Ga Lighthouse popular with travelers
Located 300 meters offshore
central Binh Thuan province’s Ham Thuan Nam township, Ke Ga island is a favorite
destination for both domestic and international tourists to conquer the island’s
over-100-year-old lighthouse and admire landscapes on the island. Ke Ga is a
6-hectare-island in Tan Thanh hamlet, Ham Thuan Nam district.
Built in 1897 by French architect Snavat, the lighthouse is 65 meters above sea
level, has a 35-meter-granite lamp tower for controlling sea traffic in the area
and is the highest lighthouse of its kind in Vietnam. The octagonal structure
has 184 granite steps leading to the top. A unique character of this lighthouse
is that the granite stones which were imported from France were carved into
different shapes and fit together like a jigsaw puzzle. The tower’s beacon is a
2000W lamp that was brought from France and is used to signal ships.
On the peak of the lighthouse, visitors are able to see a vast expanse of sea
and sky, as well as enjoy cool ocean winds, especially at sunset when travelers
can see a fantastic sight with splendid colors.
On the island, visitors can contemplate the giant flagstones with their diverse
shapes as works of art, indulge in fresh water puddles surrounded by colorful
pebbles and feast their eyes on the endless green coconut plantations that
harmonize so well with the color of the sea and the sky.
Visitors can also take advantage of overnight fishing trips. Fishing under a
full moon is one of the best experiences available here. The baked fish is
wonderful at sunrise.
In the dry season at low tide people can walk to the island. In the fall at high
tide the waves can get high. In good weather the locals rent fishing boats to
tourists in order to reach the island. With the rising demand for tours on this
island, the Binh Thuan province government plans to train boat owners in
maritime safety.
In the long run, local authorities will invest in modern boats, wharfs and
facilities to maximize the tourism potential of the island..
