Fauna in Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park
The massive ecosystems with a high
percentage of forest cover in the Park are excellent habitats for animals.
Results of faunal surveys from 1991 to 2006 have identified 735 vertebrate
species, comprising 132 mammal species, 141 reptile and amphibian species, 338
bird species and 124 fish species.
The Fauna of Phong Nha - Ke Bang is very rich in species, especially mammals,
with many threatened species such as Tiger, Bear, Large-antlered Muntjac, Dhole,
Leopard, etc.
The numerous caves, abundant food sources and low human population density
provide good habitat for several primate species. Nine species and subspecies of
Primates have been recorded at the site equivalent to 43% of the total number of
Vietnam’s primate species. All of them listed in the Vietnam Animal Red List
(2003). The site supports three Primate taxa endemic to the Annamites as Hatinh
Langur (Trachypithecus francoisi hatinhensis), Red-shanked Douc langur (Pygathrix
nemaeus), White-cheeked Gibbon (Hylobates leucogonis) and Slow Loris (Nycticebus
coucang), and Pygmy Loris (Nycticebus pygmaeus) endemic to Indochina. In
particular, the site supports almost of the total world population of Hatinh
Langur.
Karst area with many caves support the largest number of bat species in Vietnam.
There are 46 bat species recorded in the site equivalent to 43% of the number of
bat species in Vietnam. The Park is a great potential area for bat conservation.
The fauna of Phong Nha - Ke Bang is representative of the northern Annamite
Mountain Range and is closely related to the Indo-Malaya faunas. The site is
centre of animal endemism. Among species recorded at the site, there are 41
animal species are endemic to Vietnam and Annamite Mountain Range that are
global outstanding values.
