Phong Nha-Ke Bang home to rare plant
Experts have confirmed a rare plant species
has been growing in Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park in the central province of
Quang Binh for the past 500 years.
The discovery of Bach xanh (Calocedrus rupestris) was announced after a survey
by Professor Leonid Avereyanov from the Russian Khamarop Plant Institute and
Professor Phan Ke Loc from the Viet Nam Institute of Ecological and Biological
Resources and the Phong Nha-Ke Bang Science and Rescue Centre.
They have found the plants growing across more than 2,400ha of the park’s
limestone mountains, between 700-1,000m above sea level.
The 500-year-old species coverage is now considered the largest in the country
and is important to world conservation of the plant.
