Entertaining nature retreat
Whether it is a weekend
getaway or a weeklong retreat, a 70-hectare ecotourism site located 70
kilometers to the west of Hanoi’s center offers the soothing respite that all
working souls need.
For those who are looking for an outing in the wilderness that does not stray
too far away from the comforts of modern living, the Dam Long (Dragon Lagoon) is
just the ticket.
Located amidst the Bang Ta forest in Son Tay Town, which belongs to the Ba Vi
National Park, Dam Long carries with it the natural beauty of both lagoon and
forest. Walking through paths thick with lianas climbing up huge trees,
listening to the birds and chattering of monkeys the forest is home to, evokes a
contemplative mood within visitors.
Once out of the forest, a tramcar ride around the 50- hectare verdant lagoon
gives glimpses of other kinds of wildlife like lizards, varan and snakes. One
other option is to hire a small boat and row around the lagoon, enjoying the
sense of vastness during the day or at night, when our appreciation of the
wonders that the universe holds is heightened.
Tourists are welcome to go fishing in the lagoon and have their catch cooked at
the restaurant on site. Floating pavilions are a great place to stay on the
lagoon and enjoy the scent of lotus flowers and the bamboo clusters that throb
with the activities of birds that have nested there.
Right next to all this natural beauty are several modern entertainment and
recreation facilities like a swimming pool, a rope bridge, a massage parlor, a
karaoke parlor, and lodging. After a restful night’s sleep, hiking or biking
though the forests in the morning is a great way to start the day.
Also located in the area are villages of the Muong ethnic minority with many
houses on stilts, and visitors can take the opportunity to interact with them
and learn about their culture and daily life.
Another attraction not to be missed is the local market that sells many products
made by the ethnic minorities including brocade and special food items.
To reach Dam Long, follow Lang – Hoa Lac Street to reach Son Tay, and turn left
to reach the Suoi Hai area. The lagoon is another seven kilometers away.
