2,000 year-old brick foundation unearthed in Go Thap
Archeologists found an old
brick foundation yesterday after 19 days of excavating the Go Thap relic area in
hamlet 1, Tan Kieu commune, Thap Muoi district, Dong Thap province.
The foundation is in the vicinity 500m east of a ten-storey tower. With
pyramid-like architecture, the foundation, with a height of around 1.5 to 2m,
was built with bricks having dimensions of 20x30x5cm.
At a 4m depth, under the brick foundation, archeologists found reinforced wooden
rafters.
According to the archeologists, the brick foundation, dating back around 2,000
years, belongs to the Oc Eo Culture of the South.
Along with the excavation, Dong Thap province is carrying out an estimated
VND114 billion project to restore the Go Thap archeological and historical
relic, as a cultural-historical center in Dong Thap Muoi. The project is
expected to be completed by 2012.
