Memories of the war on display in HCMC
“Memories of Vietnam”, 315
sketches and paintings that take viewers on an evocative journey through
Vietnam’s passage from war to peace, opened at the Ho Chi Minh City Fine Arts
Museum last weekend.
The exhibition features 230 sketches by 71-year-old Quach Phong, who drew them
on the battlefields of southern Vietnam from 1963-1975. Another 85 paintings by
Phong and his wife, Kim Tien, 57, depict the war and the peaceful countryside
from 1963 to the present.
The sketches focus on villagers and soldiers in both the mountains and coastal
lowlands throughout the war. They’ve already shown in Bulgaria, Hungary, the US,
Thailand, and the Netherlands.
The paintings, created using oil, lacquer, silk or other materials, are on sale
for US$300-20,000 each.
The exhibition, the couple’s first joint-show, aims to express their gratitude
to their parents, teachers, colleagues and partners who supported them and
shared their happiness and difficulties through times of peace and times of war,
said Phong.
The exhibition will be open at the HCMC Fine Arts Museum, 97A Pho Duc Chinh
Street in District 1, until July 30.
