Gongs being sold in Gia Lai
Gongs being sold in Gia Lai
49 out of 409 eastern
villages, home to the ethnic minority of Ba Na, in Gia Lai Province do not have
gongs, according to the Provincial Culture, Sports and Tourism Department.
Of the number, 42 villages are in Dak Doa district.
In recent years, there has been a “gong drain” in 6 localities of Gia Lai, and
especially in Dak Doa, and this has now become a local alarming problem as many
local people have sold their traditional gongs.
From 2005 to 2008, 39 sets of gongs were sold. According to statistics, there
are only 2,282 sets of gongs, including 50 rare ones, left in the 6 localities
of Gia Lai.
