Phong Nha-Ke Bang green tour to be opened
Two foreign travel businessmen
and three Vietnamese counterparts have conducted a fact-finding tour to Phong
Nha-Ke Bang in Quang Binh province, paving the way for green tours to this World
Natural Heritage Site.
Indius Pedersen coming from Denmark and Michael Johnston from Australia want to
attract Northern European tourists, who little know about Vietnam’s tourism
attractions, to visit Vietnam.
Therefore, both were eager to explore Phong Nha-Ke Bang to make their plans
become a reality.
Departing from Hanoi Station, they took a train to Dong Hoi, Quang Binh
province. They, later, were driven on the legendary Ho Chi Minh trail to Son
river wharf.
Together with three Vietnamese friends, the two foreigners excitedly explored
Phong Nha caverns.
It was the first time those five travelers contemplated Phong Nha, which is 50km
northwest from Dong Hoi town and located at Ke Bang limestone mountain, Son
Trach commune, Bo Trach district.
Having lived in Vietnam for three years and visited numerous countrysides here,
Indius still had to confide that the images of the village, river, and beautiful
sceneries were at the top places in Vietnam. “It is sure that European tourists
will be fond of them”, he stressed.
The nonuse of mechanical engines of boats and the use of dars to protect the
environment of the cavern, made a deep and profound impression on the two
international guests. Both felt more than satisfactory about that treatment.
After the two day fact-finding trip around Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park and
its neighborhood, Indius Pedersen and Michael Johnston affirmed to team up with
some Vietnamese travel agencies to build a special project to be carried out in
Dong Hoi, Quang Binh.
Accordingly, environmentally friendly tourism routes will be opened, such as
mountaineering, kayaking, and cycling to Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park which
was recognized as a World Nature Heritage site by UNESCO in July 2003. This park
is the home of 300 beautiful caves and caverns as well as rare fauna and flora.
