Giong Festival is nominated as a World Cultural Heritage

Nguyen Sinh Hung, Deputy Prime Minister, has approved a recommendation by Hanoi People’s Committee to file “Giong Festival” to be nominated as a World Cultural Heritage by the UNESCO.
Accordingly, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, Vietnam’s National UNESCO Committee, Hanoi Municipal People’s Committee and involved agencies are assigned to complete the file to submit to the UNESCO for recognition by August 31st.
The Thanh Giong Festival, known as the festival of Phu Dong village, or Giong village, is one of the biggest festivals in the North.
During the festival shown as a stage of history and culture, the legend of Thanh Giong defeating An invaders will be revived.
Every year, thousands of people flock to Phu Dong village, Gia Lam, Hanoi on the ninth day of lunar April to enjoy the festival at the Upper Temple, the Mother Temple, and the Kien So pagoda.
Attentively, a military parade to show gratitude to St. Giong is held on the 10th day of Lunar April; and ceremonies to disarm, to report the victory to heaven and earth, and to give a feast to the troops, will be held on the following days.
