South Korean embroidery and fibre braiding displayed in Hanoi
An exhibition of Korean embroidery and fibre
braiding is being held at the Vietnam Ethnology Museum from August 28 to
September 13.
The exhibition introduces some manual embroidery, sewing and fibre plaiting made
by South Korean artisans. Korean artisans also perform handbook sewing art on
the spot.
The exhibition, entitled “Wishes and Aspirations”, is co-organised by the South
Korean Cultural Heritage Foundation, the Korean Cultural Centre in Vietnam and
the Vietnam Ethnology Museum.
Manual embroidery and fibre plaiting art developed strongly in South Korea in
the past. They nearly disappeared along with the development of industry.
However, some artisans still preserve the arts.
Artisan Koo Hae Ja, the only sewing artisan in South Korea today, said that this
country doesn’t have traditional craft villages like Vietnam and its traditional
trades are mainly preserved by a few artisans.
South Korean’s government has recently taken measures to restore traditional
craft trades. Many exhibitions of Korean traditional arts have been organised at
home and abroad.
