Private museum of female artist
Painter and art collector Phan Thi Ngoc My is the
first woman in Vietnam to open a private museum.
Ngoc My owns one of the largest collections of paintings and antiques in
Vietnam, collected over the past 20 years. She opened a private museum
presenting her collection in Quoc Oai district, Hanoi in 2006.
Ngoc My is the sixth niece of scholar Phan Huy Ich. In the 1980s, when it was
difficult to get enough food, she began collecting paintings and antiques.
Sometimes, she had to sell her house to buy valuable paintings.
She is now a member of the Hanoi Artists’ Association and deputy director of the
UNESCO Art and Environment Centre. Her own paintings are owned by many
Vietnamese and foreign collectors.
Her museum, which is named after her, Phan Thi Ngoc My, has thousands of
paintings, ceramic items and fine art handicraft objects.
In June 2008, a Japanese collector named Toykichi Itoh presented some paintings
to the museum that had been appraised and displayed at some museums in Japan.
Besides paintings and items collected by the owner, the museum also introduces
many paintings done by the painter herself. Ngoc My plans to expand her museum
and her plan has been warmly supported by related government agencies.
The museum is located in Phuc Duc village, Sai Son commune, Quoc Oai district,
Hanoi
