The Van Don Airport project, under the Vietnam’s
Northern Province of Quang Ninh’s Van Don Economic Zone (EZ), schedules to be
built in 2010, with the aim of developing the destination as Vietnam’s leading
trade, financial, and tourism center of the future.
The project was reported by the U.S’s Rockingham Asset Management LLC to the
Quang Ninh People’s Committee.
The Van Don Airport will become a center, linking flights to continents and
countries around the world. The airport will be invested under the BOT
(built-operate-transfer) type, with extensions of 25 to 35 years and will be
divided into three phases.
The first phase will extend from 2010 to 2014, the second phase from 2016 to
2020, and the third phase from 2026 to 2030; capitalized with an estimated
USD2.3 billion.
Aiming to complete the pre-feasible report of the Van Don Airport project for
the approval of the government and relevant agencies in October 2009, the Quang
Ninh People’s Committee asked investors to promptly add and update the Vietnam
civil aviation plan with the view to 2020 to get more practical calculations
about the scale and the route of the project.
The Van Don Economic Zone was submitted to Vietnam’s Prime Minister Nguyen Tan
Dung for approval in late July 2007. The EZ include the entire Van Don Island
District (both inland and offshore.)
As scheduled, the first phase until 2015 will have 40 projects prioritized in
the Van Don Economic Zone, with an estimated capital of USD5,154 million.
These projects are expected to create the essential driving force to develop the
EZ under the plan. Besides, the investor community in the EZ will enjoy
investment preferences and other legal interests.
