Italian novel in Vietnamese
Italian writer Dacia Maraini will present a
Vietnamese translation of her novel The Silent Duchess (La Lunga Vita di
Marianna Ucria) published by the Nha Nam Publishing House.
The talk will take place on Monday at 18 Le Phung Hieu Street, Ha Noi. The book
won prestigious Italian literary awards since its publication in1990, and has
since been translated into more than 15 languages.
The Silent Duchess takes the reader on a remarkable journey through the mores
and manners of 18th-century Sicily and into the mind of its enigmatic,
courageous heroine.
The writer comes to Viet Nam on the 9th Week of the Italian Language in the
World held from the 19th-25th October 2009. She also gave a lecture on Italian
Language and Art, Science and Technology at L’Espace, Ha Noi.
She is one of the most acclaimed Italian female writers. Author of more than 50
books, she has published novels, investigative studies, collections of poetry,
essays and theatrical plays.
Several movies have been made from her books and she herself has written
screenplays for film directors such as Pier Paolo Pasolini. Her works have been
translated into dozen of languages, and a number of these have been awarded
prestigious Italian and International prizes, such as International Formentor
Prize (1963), Premio Campiello (1990) and Premio Strega (1999).
"We are particularly honoured to host Dacia Maraini in Viet Nam on the occasion
of the 9th Italian Language Week as she is one of the most appreciated Italian
writers and she has expressed her sincere desire to visit Viet Nam and meet the
Vietnamese people," said Italian Ambassador Andrea Perugini.
The 9th global Italian Language Week focuses on "Italian Language and Art,
Science and Technology". Art and science found in Italy over the centuries an
unprecedented level of cohesion and some of the greatest Italian artists – such
as Brunelleschi, Leon Battista Alberti, Leonardo da Vinci, and Galileo Galilei –
were able to combine these apparently unrelated fields..
