Champa Sculpture Museum opens new showrooms
The two showrooms were
designed in accordance with the original architecture of the Museum of Cham
Sculpture with the assistance of experts from the Guimet Museum of Asian Arts
and the French School of the Far East.
Nearly 50 objects in the two new showrooms were restored and displayed by modern
museological technology.
The two new showrooms are the result of a 4-year cooperation between the Museum
of Cham Sculpture, the French School of the Far East, Guimet Museum and the
National Museum of Cambodia. This project was conducted after the Guimet
Museum’s big exhibition in France named “Vietnam’s art treasure – Cham
sculpture”.
The two new showroom project is part of a French-funded project, which runs from
2005 to 2009. Besides the Museum of Cham Sculpture, four other Vietnamese
museums benefit from this project, namely the Vietnam Museum of Ethnology, Dak
Lak Province Museum, Vietnam Museum of History in HCM City and the War Remnant
Museum in HCM City.
The Museum of Cham Sculpture is located in Hai Chau district, central city of Da
Nang. The museum was founded in 1915 as the Musée Henri Parmentier during the
colonial French era to preserve the finds of the ancient Champa kingdom. It is
the only museum in the world dedicated solely to this era. It houses the largest
collection of Cham sculpture. The building is situated by the Han River. It is a
popular tourist destination.
