Hat Xoan dossier to be submitted to UNESCO
The dossier for Hat Xoan should be completed and
submiited to UNESCO for recognition as an intangible World Cultural Heritage in
need of urgent protection, says Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Thien Nhan.
The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the UNESCO National Committee
will be responsible for preparation of the dossier.
Hat Xoan (also known as Hat Cua Dinh) is a unique vocal music form which used to
be performed in front of the Communal House in spring. Most Xoan melodies came
from ancient villages in the centre of the Van Lang State during the Hung
dynasties.
In addition to 69 Xoan singers over the age of 60. Phu Tho now has 49 younger
people who can sing Xoan folk songs; 81 others are Xoan singing group members.
Only 8 individuals are qualified to teach Xoan singing.
In Phu Tho province, there are four Xoan singing groups established under the
auspices of the provincial Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism - namely
Xoan An Thai, Xoan Thet, Xoan Phu Duc and Xoan Kim Dai - and three other
self-established groups.
At one time, Xoan singing chambers were preserved in 30 pagodas. Now, 13 of
these have been renovated to help preserve the art form, two are badly in need
of repair, and 15 non-existent.
Although Hat Xoan used to be very popular, it is now at risk of being lost
forever. Immediate action is needed if Hat Xoan is to be preserved for future
generations.
