How many visitors are invited to Hanoi for the 1000th anniversary?
The great anniversary is approaching and the
public is now interested in Hanoi’s preparations to welcome visitors.
Welcoming visitors is among the most important tasks of the organizing board,
but they have yet to finalize the guest list.
China will send the biggest delegation to Hanoi, with representatives from
Beijing, Guangxi, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Tianjin, Guangdong, Hainan, Yunnan and
Taipei.
Japan ranks second with delegates from Tokyo, Hiroshima, Yokohama, Fukuoka and
Nara.
Two cities in Laos are invited, including Vientiane and Luang Prabang. Cambodia
will send officials from two cities, Phnom Penh and Sihanoukville.
Officials from the capital cities of many other Asian countries are also
invited, including Singapore, Myanmar, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, the
Philippines, Brunei, Australia, New Zealand, India, Kazakhstan, Republic of
Korea and People’s Democratic Republic of Korea.
Dozens of cities in Europe and the US are also on the list. Invitations have
also been extended to around 25 international organizations, such as the UNESCO,
UNDP, the World Bank, the World Health Organisation and the UN Food and
Agriculture Organisation.
But how many guests will come? No one knows for sure yet.
Guests from 62 provinces and cities in Vietnam are also expected, but that list
is also not completed. One official estimates that each province and city will
send around five guests.
Even though preparations for the anniversary have been in the making for several
years, some are concerned that they have yet to calculate the expected number of
visitors.
As of March 12, Hanoi authorities have asked big hotels for their help in
preparing rooms for the city’s guests this October.
An official of the Hanoi Tourism Corporation told Tien Phong newspaper that it
will be difficult to have enough rooms for international guests in October. The
corporation has booked 300 rooms for October 7-10 at the Sheraton and
Intercontinental, but this number is still small compared to the expected
demand.
The corporation asked Hanoi authorities to find more hotels to serve foreign
guests and issued standards on accommodations, food, and travel as foundations
for the corporation to negotiate with hotels before May 30.
