Restoring and protecting the One-Pillar pagoda
The restoration and protection of the One-Pillar
pagoda will be completed by September 2010.
The Hanoi City People’s Committee assigned Ba Dinh district to cooperate with
relevant agencies to carry out the project upgrading the infrastructure and
scenery at the relic area, improving the yard, drainage and grass cover.
In addition, Hanoi Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism and Ba Dinh
district People’s Committee will coordinate with relevant agencies to conduct
environmental protection measures by microorganic methods at the lotus pond at
the pagoda in June 2010. The roof of the pagoda will be restored by September
2010.
Hanoi’s famous One-Pillar Pagoda was originally built in 1049 by Ly Thai Tong.
Its design depicts a lotus blossom rising out of a sea of sorrow. The temple has
been rebuilt many times, most recently after having been destroyed by the French
before they left Hanoi in 1954.
