Paying tribute to the Ly dynasty’s eight kings at Do Temple
Do Temple or Ly Bat De Temple, where eight kings
from the Ly dynasty are worshipped, is located in Dinh Bang Commune, Tien Son
District in Bac Ninh Province, just 20 kilometers from downtown Hanoi.
Those kings are Ly Thai To, Ly Thai Tong, Ly Thanh Tong, Ly Nhan Tong, Ly Than
Tong, Ly Anh Tong, Ly Cao Tong and Ly Hue Tong.
Under the Ly dynasty, there were nine reigns, but the last sovereign Ly Chieu
Hoang was a woman, so she did not receive recognition at the temple.
Do Temple covers an area of more than 30,000 square meters with a temple, a lake
and a pre-offering house to display palanquins among other attractions on the
site.
Each year on March 15 on the lunar calendar, people flock to Do Temple to
celebrate a longstanding festival that coincides with the crowning day of the
first Ly dynasty ruler, King Ly Cong Uan in the 11th century.
