New research findings show 31km Thien Duong cave longest in Viet Nam
Thien Duong Cave in Bo Trach District in Quang
Binh Province was recently found to be the country's deepest cave, at some 31km
long, according to a report in the Sai Gon Giai Phong daily newspaper on Monday.
After carefully studying data on the cave, a report was released announcing the
new findings, said Dr Howard Limbert, from the British Royal Cave Research
Association yesterday. It is likely to be the longest dry cave in Asia, said
Libert.
First discovered in 2005, the cave, whose name means ‘Paradise', is located in
the Phong Nha-Ke Bang park's conservation area. The cave, 191m above sea level,
has the most beautiful and spectacular stalactites in the park. Despite the
robust geological tectonic process, the whole of the cave's structure has been
preserved intact.
Upon it's initial discovery, explorers thought the cave was only 5km deep. The
recently discovered section of the cave, adding some 26km to its depth, is home
to several small animals. However, the species have yet to be identified. The
cave is well ventilated and is expected to be an attractive tourist destination
in the near future thanks to its beautiful limestone formations.
