Lang Biang shakes, rattles and rolls for spring festival
The Lang Biang Plateau will be
hopping with gong playing, drinking, horse racing and a variety of musical
performances during the three-day “Spring in Lang Biang” festival that begins
today.
Traditional singers from the local K’ho ethnic minority community will share the
stage with Ho Chi Minh City pop singers for the event’s opening show tonight in
the Central Highlands province of Lam Dong.
Nguyen Quoc Ky, Lac Duong District People’s Committee vice chairman, said the
plateau party at the foot of Lang Biang Mountain was in celebration of the
district’s 30th anniversary.
As the K’Ho people make up a majority of the district’s population, traditional
K’Ho music, sports and games will be the event’s main activities. The K’Ho have
lived on the plateau for centuries and are well known for their gong songs and
dances as well as for drinking can, a homemade liquor drunk in groups by sipping
through straws attached to a large gourd.
Lac Duong District authorities co-organize the cultural festival with the Lam
Dong Cultural Center and HCMC Television.
