Hanoi welcomes foreign journalists for 1,000 Year Anniversary
In anticipation of the upcoming 1,000 Year
Anniversary of Thang Long - Hanoi, the city opened its doors and welcomed
international media to join in the celebrations. The international welcoming
conference for foreign media was held at Hanoi's Daewoo Hotel on September 10.
Ho Quang Loi, Chairman of the Education and Communication Committee of the Hanoi
Party Committee, welcomed the international media.
Hanoi's image as an international "City of Peace", as recognized by the United
Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and its
elaborate history were on full display as the great celebration of Hanoi is just
30 days away.
Highlighted were the many achievements of Hanoi throughout its history and its
standing as one of the 10 most interesting cities to visit in Asia. Having been
awarded the Gold Star Medal (the most prestigious medal of Vietnam) 3 times and
one of only 29 capital cities in the world that is 1,000 years or older, Hanoi
has become an iconic international city.
Ho Quang Loi noted that, "The Thang Long - Hanoi 1,000 year history of
construction and development associates with the dramatic and heroic upheavals,
important political, economic and cultural events at a national and
international scale. 1,000 years of history is also a process of tempering,
forming and fostering the spiritual, material and cultural values of the peolpe
and the land of Thang Long - Hanoi."
He views the presence of international media in Hanoi as an opportunity to make
the celebration "echo in all over the world". To add to the echo, live
broadcasts have been planned worldwide so Vietnamese and others can follow and
join in the festivities.
Ho Quang Loi also highlighted the hundreds of commemorative activities that have
been arranged for the 10 day Grand Celebration of Hanoi, beginning October 1. He
also shared the accomplishments of many completed projects that were set forth
in preparation of the anniversary including; the Hanoi Library, Hanoi Musuem,
Thanh Giong Monument, Statue of Uncle Ho - Uncle Ton, Peace Park, Hanoi -
Amsterdam High School, The Road Ceramics, Perimeter Road 3, Co Loa Citadel
Relic, Thanh Tri Bridge, Vinh Tuy Bridge, and Thang Long Highway.
However, there are still 28 projects due to be completed before the celebrations
which are still under construction.
Media addressed subjects such as traffic jam's during the celebration which the
city is preparing to cope with. Hanoi is, "Not only ready, but happy to receive
tourists in Hanoi," shared Madam Ngo Thi Thanh Hang, Vice Chairwoman of the
National Steering Committee on the Millennium of Thang Long - Hanoi. With over
300 hotels in the 3 - 5 star range, and thousands of others, the city is
confident it is prepared to handle the massive amount of visitors expected to
join in the celebrations.
Hanoi was chosen as the capital city in the autumn of year 1010 by King Ly Thai
To.
