Getting on board The Deck
An upmarket restaurant very James Bond 007 style combined with Pan Asian cuisine and Vietnamese produce is situated just on banks of the majestic Saigon River, Ho Chi Minh City.
It is The Deck.
The restaurant is minutes from the heart of Ho Chi Minh City, in An Phu of District 2. It is located near the end of Nguyen U Di Street.
The entrance is an alley fully covered with bamboo, like the entrance to a Vietnamese village. After the gate are lotuses grown in big earthen water jars, adding some more Vietnamese spirits. When sitting close to the river bank, what you can see more is a backdrop of coconut trees and with boats sailing up and down the river.
It is a great place to see the sunset. The Deck has a new electric retractable roof that functions when it rains. The long stretch bar is both indoor and outdoor, and the roof is for the outdoor part. Under the outdoor part is Saigon River water.
Pan Asian cuisine at The Deck is prepared with Vietnamese produce such as seafood from Phu Quoc Island and Nha Trang, and vegetables from the upland city of Dalat.
The Deck serves happy hours from 4pm to 7pm weekdays. The operating hours from 8:30am to midnight come after early morning Yoga class.
Anna Craven, consultant with law firm Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer, owns and runs the restaurant, designed by her bare-footed Australian husband from Perth named Lawson Johnston. He also runs an eco-resort called Mango Bay on Phu Quoc Island, a famous tourist destination off the southern province of Kien Giang.
Johnston says the stunning and environmental friendly natural fibers available in Vietnam have inspired him to design a range of contemporary lounge furniture in his different business jobs in the country. Johnston adds his furniture designs accommodate selective professionals such as restaurateurs, resort owners and distributors.
