Phu Quoc Airport to be operational by October 2011
Deputy Prime Minister, Hoang Trung Hai, has just
instructed the Southern Airports Corporation to actively collaborate with the
Kien Giang People’s Committee to thoroughly settle problems related to ground
clearing in the project to build Phu Quoc Airport.
He also urged the company to mobilise all of its efforts and assets to
accelerate the project implementation and to put the airport into operation by
October 2011.
According to Southern Airports Corporation, the project covers over 900 ha and
will cost some VND 16,200 billion, which is 100 per cent invested in by the
company.
Under the design, a modern airport will be built on the Phu Quoc Island to serve
large passenger aircraft like the Boeing 777 and Boeing 747-400 and have a
capacity of 7 million passengers and 27,600 tonnes of cargo per year.
The project is one of key projects on the island as Central and local
authorities wished to develop Phu Quoc as an international financial, economic
and tourism center and a national and regional communication hub.
