Buffalo herders’ festival revived after 70 years

For the first time in 70 years, children from 17 villages gathered to celebrate the Muc dong (buffalo herders) festival in Da Nang November 28.
More than 60 children assembled in Phong Le village, Hoa Chau commune, Hoa Vang district, to celebrate the Muc dong festival, which was last held in 1936.
In ancient times, Muc dong was first celebrated every three years, then every six years, and more recently, only once in 12 years.
This year, the festival saw a procession of 60 buffalo herders, together with representatives of 17 clans in the village, carrying palanquins, whips, flags and farming tools.
Muc dong is a celebration of the cultural heritage of the village.
After the procession, the buffalo herders participated in traditional children’s games such as a blind-man catching ducks and tug-of-war.
