Can Tho international airport a landmark for Mekong Delta
Can Tho international airport, one of the Mekong
Delta’s most important infrastructure developments, inaugurated last week.
The Southern Airport Corporation (SAC) has completed the airport upgradation,
formerly known as Tra Noc airport.
Minister of Transport Ho Nghia Dung said Can Tho airport would help meet the
increasing demand of air transport in the region.
Dung said the airport would be a driver for development of the Mekong Delta, as
it linked the south with Hanoi and the rest of the country.
“The international airport will be a transit hub that serves domestic flights
from Can Tho to Hanoi and other cities in the country such as Danang, Hue and
Nha Trang,” said SAC general director Nguyen Nguyen Hung.
The airport will be able to handle at least one million passengers and 5,000
tonnes of cargo per year to 2015.
The airport was upgraded to receive domestic flights in 2008 and international
flights in 2009, at a cost of VND11 trillion ($565 million).
Located at a trade intersection in Vietnam’s Mekong Delta, Can Tho is the
commercial-service, science-technology and education and training hub of
southwestern provinces.
